GCSE Pass Rate At Forge Increases For Third Year Running

Students and staff at Ormiston Forge Academy are celebrating another great day of results after A level success last week. Students at the academy in Cradley Heath have achieved 51% A*-C pass rate for five GCSEs, including English and Maths. Two years ago this figure was 44% and last year it was 47%.

This excellent set of GCSE results represents a 4% point increase on the 5 A* – C grades including English and Maths from last year and a 7% point increase from 2 years ago. Even more so, there has been a significant improvement at the top end with a record 63 A* (A-star) grades amongst the year 11 cohort and 63% of students achieved 5 A*-C grades, this is all in spite of declining national trends.

Alongside results that are consistently good like Business Studies and Maths there have been some incredible departmental performances this year. Despite more students choosing to do sciences, the subject has posted 95% A*-C in Chemistry, 95% A*-C in Physics and 98% A*-C in Biology, all results were an improvement on last year. English students achieved a 67% A*-C pass rate, an increase of 3% on last year. Humanities subjects went from 60% A*-C in 2014 to 77% A*-C this year, with double-figure increases in History and Geography. Languages rocketed from 43% to 59%, an increase of 16% at A*-C grades and Sport/PE posted a phenomenal increase of 35% on last year with a 94% pass rate at A*-C.

Notable achievements this year include:

Gurjivan Singh – 12 A* (also achieved a grade B in AS Psychology)
Eyna Sadeqa – 10 A*, 2 A
Jodie Poole – 7 A*, 2 A, 2 B
Laheba Rawdah – 6 A*, 6 A
K-Ryan Hinds – 5 A*, 3 A, 3 B
Jade Willetts – 4 A*, 4 A, 2 B, 1 C
Lauren Bradley – 3 A*, 4 A, 3 B
Memory Bhunu – 2 A*, 7 A, 3 B
Ellie-Mae Taylor – 2 A*, 5 A, 3 B
Richard Walker – 2 A*, 6 B, 2 C, 1 D

The 5 GCSE A*-G pass rate has barely fluctuated over the last 3 years at 96%, showing the academy provides a model of consistently good education; all of this, combined with the outstanding A level results from last week, means the academy represents excellent choice for Sandwell students starting in September at year 7.

Andrew Burns, Principal, said: “I’m delighted with the results this year, above all they show that we are making consistent progress and building on solid foundations. Our students are benefiting from our robust methods, great teachers, excellent support network and our hard work ethic. Students don’t come to Forge for an easy life, they come to achieve and I see that every single day. We’ll push them, we’ll support them and we’ll celebrate with them on days like this.”
He added: “Many of the students who are picking their results up today will be back in September as sixth formers. The A level results last week showed us that our expectations and levels of performance run right through the academy. Every student matters from the moment they walk through the door in September at 11 years old until they leave us for university or the world of work. Our commitment to them is relentless, this is how it should be!”

Dr Lisa Mason, Vice Principal for Key Stage 4, said: “Once again, every one of our year 11 students achieved examination pass; it is important that each student secures success in their studies with us and I’m incredibly proud of this. I congratulate them all.”

Professor Toby Salt CEO of Ormiston Academies Trust said: “It is our absolute priority as a Trust to ensure every student fulfils their potential and we are delighted to see a further rise in GCSE results at Ormiston Forge Academy. Students, staff and parents deserve great credit for these results which reflect their commitment and determination to succeed.”
