Forge students enjoy special Chinese New Year lunch

With this Saturday (25th January) being Chinese New Year, students at Ormiston Forge Academy in Cradley Heath are getting the opportunity to celebrate the occasion during their school lunchtimes this week, with a special menu from school caterers, Educaterers.

The lunch menu was put together especially for students at the Academy to mark Chinese New Year and is being served up by the Educaterers catering team – with a pair of chopsticks given to every pupil who orders a Chinese meal so they can ‘have a go’ and demonstrate their chopstick ability!

The week-long menu features some delicious options with oodles of noodles, including vegetarian options, served up alongside Chinese New Year-themed sweet treats and fortune cookies.

Chinese New Year is the Chinese festival that celebrates the beginning of a new year on the traditional Chinese calendar – and this year is the Year of the Rat.

Terry Tredget, Director of Educaterers, said: “We wanted to help the students celebrate Chinese New Year at Ormiston Forge Academy with this special menu and give them a bit of a change from their usual lunchtime.

We’re absolutely delighted to have the contract to serve school meals at Ormiston Forge Academy and my appreciation goes, as always, to our catering teams, who are our greatest asset. They work closely with schools to come up with novel ways to get their students engaged at lunchtimes and enjoying an assortment of freshly prepared foods throughout the year.

We know we have some very discerning customers – we provide more than 120,000 school meals to pupils every week at over 200 schools in Birmingham, Warwickshire and Oxfordshire – so we need to make sure that the food we provide is delicious, healthy and nutritious to everyone we serve.

Lisa Mason, Principal at Forge, said: “I’m delighted that our students will be joining the millions of people celebrating the Chinese New Year this week. Trying new things and celebrating diversity are two things that make life at Forge varied and interesting.

We try and ensure that Forge students have a rich cultural capital and I’m pleased that we share this focus with partners like Educaterers.

Educaterers take care to use locally sourced ingredients, seasonal fruit and vegetables, British Red Tractor and RSPCA Freedom Foods Accredited meat and free-range eggs and hold the Soil Association’s Food for Life Silver Catering Mark.

Schools using the Educaterers service have special menus throughout the year to mark annual events such as St George’s Day and Christmas, and for special occasions like last year’s Rugby World Cup.
