Forge students collect GCSE results

Students at Ormiston Forge Academy, which is in Cradley Heath, Sandwell, are celebrating today after receiving their GCSE results, as they get ready to take their next steps in their education journey.

With nearly half of all students achieving a GCSE Grade 4 or above in English and maths, there is cause for smiles today at Forge. Staff, students and families have come together to mark the achievements of all the students, who have worked exceptionally hard over the past two years to secure these grades.

Overall, 49 per cent of students achieved a Grade 4 or above in both English and maths – with Grade 4 set by the Government as a pass. There has also been a small increase from 2019, to 33 per cent, in the number of students achieving a Grade 5 or above in both English and maths – defined by the Government as a “strong pass” or better.

The students at Forge, which is sponsored by Ormiston Academies Trust (OAT), have achieved results which reflect the hard work and commitment shown throughout their studies.

Overall progress has been good this year with many subjects that have made huge improvements since 2019 including English, maths, languages, humanities, languages and the Ebbac, the latter four areas all showing positive Progress 8 scores.

Lisa Mason, Principal at Ormiston Forge Academy, said:

Arguably, the students who took their GCSEs this year were disrupted more than any other cohort and despite this they have done very well. Their results are the efforts of hours of hard work and I’d like to congratulate them and say on record how much I have admired their grit and determination to get through this and take the next step on their journey, many of whom will continue at our sixth form.

At Forge, the overall progress score for GCSE students is almost at zero indicating that, as a cohort, students have performed as expected. This gives us an excellent foundation to build on and exceed expectations which is what we are committed to. The results this year complement our excellent A level results showing just how much value we can add to students’ academic outcomes.

I would also like to thank our staff for all of their hard work in preparing students in this difficult GCSE year, they have helped to raise standards and ensure that our students are prepared, not just for exams, but for life as well-rounded, decent members of society.

In maths, 57 per cent of students achieved Grade 4 or above, which has remained consistent from 2019; 38 per cent of these students achieved a grade 5 or above representing an increase of 3 per cent from 2019. In English Language and English Literature, 64 per cent and 62 per cent of students achieved grade 4 or above respectively. In computer science 93 per cent of students achieved a grade 4 or above with 82 per cent of these students achieving a ‘strong pass’ of grade 5 and above. The Academy also saw strong attainment in individual subjects where 44 per cent of biology students, 34 per cent of physics students, 46 per cent of German students and 43 per cent of chemistry students achieved a Grade 7 or above.

Last week students at Forge capped a remarkable year with 100 per cent of A level students achieving three or more A level passes at grades A*-E.  As such, every subject at A level secured a 100 per cent pass rate with 68 per cent of A level students achieving three or more passes at grades A*-C, enabling them to secure places at their chosen universities, on coveted apprenticeships and selected jobs.

274 year 11 students have all studied at least 8 GCSE or BTEC subjects from a broad range of 23 subject areas.

If you are a year 11 student and would like to consider joining Forge in the sixth form in September, email: [email protected] with GCSE results as soon as possible.

Ormiston Forge Academy also has an Open Day on Thursday 22nd September and Saturday 24th September for any families wanting to learn more about joining year 7 in September 2023 or our Sixth Form now. The doors will be open from 6.00pm–8.30pm on Thursday and 9am until 12 on Saturday. No need to book, just turn up.

GCSE subjects are marked under a 1-9 grading system, with 9 being the highest grade. GCSEs are linear in structure rather than modular, with all exams at the end of a two-year course. A grade 4 is effectively an old C grade and the top grade, a grade 9 is the equivalent of the very top A*.
